Conceived through close collaboration with a national childcare operator, this landmark childcare centre began with a shared vision—to create a place that inspires playfulness in children, welcomes families, and strengthens the social fabric of a developing neighbourhood in one of Melbourne’s newest growth areas.
Our design process, explored how movement, colour, and form can shape experience. Bold, undulating rooflines are introduced to evoke a sense of play and discovery, their rhythmic forms echoing the natural energy of childhood. Bright, complementary colours bring warmth and identity, making a positive contribution to the streetscape, establishing the centre as a joyful character within its suburban setting.
Inside, spaces flow intuitively—open, light-filled interiors connect seamlessly to landscaped play areas while a bright colour palette establishes a child-centred visual identity. Parents and staff are welcomed into inviting communal zones that encourage interaction and engagement, reinforcing the centre’s role as both an educational environment and a place of gathering.
Every element, from material selections to the bold sculpted roof profiles, has been refined to balance functionality with expressive intent. Integrated landscaping enhances outdoor learning with careful shade and shelter design. A parents’ lounge space activates the street edge, offering a welcoming space that strengthens neighbourhood connection.
The resulting design is bold and full of movement. Our design maximises northern light, visual connections to play areas, and engagement with the adjacent reserve. Smiths Lane is a joyful, enduring setting for childhood growth where architecture becomes a catalyst for play, belonging, and everyday wonder.
